Three-day workshop on Mediation organised by Pro Bono Club during 01-03, 2023

A three-day Workshop on Mediation was organized under the aegis of Pro Bono Club run by the Ministry of Law and Justice at the School of Law and Governance (SLG), Central University of South Bihar (CUSB). Under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh, the workshop was organized under the supervision of Dr. Deo Narayan Singh, Nodal Officer of Probono Club.

The workshop was formally inaugurated by SLG Dean Prof. Sanjay Prakash Srivastava in the presence of chief guest Mr. Ashish Kumar Agnihotri, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Secretary, Gaya District Legal Services Authority) and certified mediator Kavita Bhatia from the International Mediation Institute. On this occasion, SLG faculty members Prof. Ashok Kumar, Dr. Surendra Kumar, Dr. Devnarayan Singh, Dr. Anurag Aggarwal and Shri Mani Pratap, Dr. Anuja Mishra, Dr. Chandana Suba and students were present.

Dean Prof. Sanjay Prakash Srivastava described the mediation workshop as very important for the students of Law Faculty and said that mediation provides the facility of quick resolution of disputes arising in the society. Chief guest Mr. Ashish Kumar Agnihotri introduced the students to various aspects related to law. He said that people make very little use of mediation and try to go to court proceedings more. In his address, the chief guest also mentioned in detail the legal aid provided for mediation and the rights of the general public. He said that the law on arbitration is a strong alternative dispute resolution mechanism which gives more satisfactory results than litigation.

On this occasion, Kavita Bhatia informed the participating students about the basic principles of mediation related training. He said that mediation is a major form of ADR (alternative to dispute resolution), which focuses on dialogue, compromise, and resolution. This method provides assistance to the disputing parties in finding solutions and achieving a harmonious settlement. The main objective of mediation is to encourage dialogue and agreement between the disputing parties. This approach helps move them towards solving the problem and helps them reach agreement on a professional or personal level.

 On the third day, mediator Kavita Bhatia explained to the students about the negotiation process in mediation. He said, “Mediation is a process that establishes an environment of readiness and cooperation between two parties to resolve disputed matters and issues. Negotiation plays an important role in this, which helps both the parties to reach an agreement. “. The initial phase involves initiation of negotiations and periodic analysis of the parties’ claims. Presenting the vote of thanks, Dr. Devnarayan Singh said that it is the responsibility of the Probono Club to spread awareness in the society so that it becomes possible to settle as many cases as possible outside the judicial court through arbitration agreements.
