Under Viksit Bharat @ 2047 campaign, a special lecture on the topic “Development of Geography in the 21st Century” was organized in the Department of Geography, Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) on December 12, 2023. Under the patronage of VC Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh, the programme was organized under the supervision of Head of the Department Prof. Kiran Kumari. The key speaker at the program was Dr. Binod Kumar Singh, Director of National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization (NATMO). Prof. Chairman of the Geography Department of Tripura University was the guest of the program. Prof. Yamanur Venkata Krishnaniah, and Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Sinha from NATMO were present.
Dr. Binod Kumar Singh, the keynote speaker of the program, said that at present there is a need to develop India-centric approach, policy and regulation in the subject of geography and geography on the basis of information, knowledge and wisdom. Talking about geographical spatial equality and Planet 50/50 gender equality in the 21st century, Dr. Singh said that social equality in the fields of education, health, employment etc. should be our goal. Discussing sustainable development, he said that the dream of creating a developed India @2047 will be realized only when we try to take forward India’s knowledge tradition by combining it with new technology while achieving 100% quality of education system. While making the students aware about the working system of NATMO, he explained the real objective of Geography. Further, he explained the nature and definition of the subject of Geography in the 21st century, and what qualities and skills should be required in Geography so that the students can prove themselves to be employable in Geography in the future because today India is not a consumer but a partner in the global market. Will have to come forward like. At present, in the National Education Policy 2020 and National Geographic Spatial 2022 by the Government of India, the development of geography should be through India-based research. Dr. Singh discussed the development of the subject of Geography by linking it with the organizational structure and working methodology of National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization and Survey of India.
Other speaker Prof. Yamanur Venkata Krishnaniah, while discussing in detail about the development of geography in the 21st century, said that we need geography to become society based for the survival of the society. Giving the presidential views of the lecture, the Head of the Department, Prof. Kiran Kumari also stressed on the National Geospatial Policy, 2022, which aims to establish high-resolution topographic survey and mapping by 2030. The stage was conducted by Assistant Professor Dr. Manjeet Singh and vote of thanks by Dr. Sunita Singh in this program. Dr. Joginder Singh Chauhan, Dr. Somnath Bera and all the researchers and postgraduate students of the department were present.
