Salient Features of Academic Curriculum

Presently the University offers three (3) Undergraduate (UG) programmes, 25 Postgraduate (PG) programmes and 22 Ph.D. programmes through 25 departments under 11 schools.
Semester system is followed in all of the academic programmes in order to enlarge curricular space and encourage more learning opportunities. Moreover, the latter enhances the ability to accommodate diverse choices that dynamic and motivated students may like to have. The decisions regarding faculty-to-students contact hours during a semester in different programmes; the decision regarding the credit system determining the quantum of class room learning hours; elements of participatory teaching-learning process; field-work; lab-work; and, other curricular work are taken by various academic bodies of the university.
It has some unique features, such as enhanced learning opportunities, ability to match student’s scholastic needs and aspirations, horizontal intra-, and inter-School/ Centre mobility of students, inter-institutional transferability of students, improvement in educational quality and excellence, flexibility for working students to complete the programme over an extended period of time, innovation and comparability of educational programmes across the country. CBCS will facilitate vertical integration of knowledge and holistic development of self.
‘Continuous Internal Evaluation’ is the central feature of the evaluation system in this university. A teacher who offers the course is the best person to assess performance of the students. However, there is the end-semester evaluation. And, to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability appropriate mechanisms have been devised.
All appropriate steps are taken to create and maintain infrastructure required for quality teaching and research.
The University has been evolving dynamic, transparent, equal-opportunity governance, and need based capacity-building system. The University is following a decentralised and participative system of governance to achieve the mandate stated in the Act and Statues. Faculty members are directly involved in decision-making bodies of the University, which in turn helps the students in a great way for redressal of their grievances. Each department of the University has a Departmental Committee and it takes the decisions for academic proposals at initial state before being placed before Apex decision-making bodies of the University. The Board of Studies (BOS) is also an important body of the department which specifically looks after the curriculum development work. Also, the University has put it efforts towards the use of E-Governance tools to bring effectiveness into its administration to promote transparency and efficiency in the system. : It had been moving towards e-governance and continuous training of the personnel to make the university system ‘user-friendly’. Professional enrichment of education administrators would become a necessary component for the capacity building of the university administration.
Like physical health, mental health determines efficiency and productivity. Mental health is critically important to teaching-learning processes, creativity and congenial environment in academic institutions. The university adopts a forward looking approach and provides psychological counselling and guidance services to the students, faculty and employees. Innovative programmes, such as ‘Crises Intervention Programmes’ and ‘Community Mental Health Programme’ are planned to be developed.
The University is having an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to ensure progressive improvement in efficiency of the functioning of the institution specifically the University administration. The Planning, Development and Monitoring Board (PDMB) with appropriate powers and functions is instituted following UGC guidelines.
UGC guidelines are followed in the university admission process. Efforts are made to have students from all over the country. And, to achieving the same, the Admission to various programmes (courses) of the University is made through national level entrance test jointly conducted by 14 Central Universities and named as Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET). With its transparent and national level admission process, the University has succeeded to attract the students from different states and maintaining the diversity and national character efficiently.
All research scholars (Ph.D.) students get UGC scholarship. In addition to Centre government and state government funded scholarships, the University offers a number of scholarship schemes to deserving and needy students, namely (i) Merit Scholarship to CUSBET / Semester Toppers (ii) Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (iii) Earn While You Learn (EWYL) Scheme & (iv) Attendance Based Merit Scholarship.
Presently the University offers accommodation to students with one (1) Boys Hostel and one (1) Girls Hostel having combined capacity to accommodate around 800 students. Mess facility is also available for students residing in the hostels on payment basis.
The University has its Health Centre, which provides primary level treatment to faculty, staff and students for general ailments under the supervision of Medical officer.
All the students of the University are insured under this scheme. This is a unique policy of National Insurance Company (NIC) designed to provide health and personal accident cover to the students. Under this scheme the students are eligible for cashless treatment in authorized hospitals as well as for reimbursement of cost of treatment in other hospitals within the limit of Rs. 50,000.
The University has a Career Counselling and Placement Cell which takes care of the campus placements and job opportunities for the students. Many students got job placement during the session 2018 – 19 in organisations like Azim Premji Foundation, Care India (NGO), Gandhi Fellowship – Piramal Foundation, etc. Students from Media department got placements in Times of India, Hindustan Times, ETV Bharat, Hindustan Dainik and Prabhat Khabar and along with many other organisations.
Keeping in view the importance of role of practice based learning / first-hand industry experience the University makes arrangements for internship opportunities to the students during Summer vacation.
The University has committees like Games and Sports Activities Committee, Cultural Activities Committee which conducts various activities for students round the year. The students of the University participate in the state and nation level competitions and events under the supervision of co-ordinators of the committees and impress all with their brilliant performances.
The board is responsible to maintain discipline among the students of University and it functions under supervision of the Chief Proctor. The Proctorial board takes preventive steps to maintain the discipline within the University premises, issues the notices and warnings as per need of the situation.
The Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) is shouldering the responsibility of looking after the general welfare of students outside classrooms, in order to ensure all round development. The office of DSW also performs the duties and functions viz. (i) make arrangements for educational tours, excursions and participation in sports activities outside the University (ii) conduct social and cultural activities (iii) form of student bodies (iv) evaluate student – teacher relationship (v) examine and recommend for financial aid to needy students and concession for travel, and other facilities (vi) facilitate fellowships / scholarships for further studies in the country or abroad (vii) student counselling (viii) provide special assistance (if required) to differently abled students or women students (ix) provide Student information services (x) organise alumni association (xii) issue certificates as authorised and delegated by the Vice-Chancellor.

Best Practices

Elaborate arrangement has been made to ensure that the water discharged through sewerage
gets recycled. The rain water is collected in the artificially constructed ponds located at the north-east of the campus through a network of drainage system.

University has well defined protocol for all types of hazardous, chemical and other waste disposal.

 

Students are engaged in the local community development either through non-credit courses as a part of their curriculums e.g. courses like  Village-based Skills, Plantation of Trees, or students are encouraged and motivated to participate in such activities. One such successful student-driven organization within the CUSB is SMiLE group which has been actively involved in helping surrounding unprivileged children by distributing stationary and other essential items and also helping them learn the subjects.
